For working on a distant machine or playing games with friends, parsec is a great tool for accessing machines over a local or distant network. I currently have parsec set up on a raspberry pi in my living room and it connects to my gaming machine in my office. It works very well, although so far the best experience has been when the resolution is set at 720p.
